| This study examines the economic impacts that have resulted from new or recently expanded North Dakota firms in three sectors (agricultural processing, other manufacturing, and exportable services), addressing such dimensions as number of jobs created, compensation paid to employees, and the expenditures made to entities within the local area and elsewhere in the state. Information was obtained from a questionnaire completed by 42 new or recently expanded firms. The responding firms had added an average of 29 jobs from 1990 to 1996. | Wildlife-related recreation is an important source of economic activity in North Dakota. Using primary, survey-based data, the expenditures and economic impacts of hunters and anglers were summarized for the 1996 hunting/fishing seasons. Total resident and nonresident expenditures (including cost of licenses and additional nonresident expenditures not related to hunting/angling) came to $594 million. Almost $144 million of total expenditures was spent in rural areas by nonresidents and urban residents. | Rural households in China have traditionally consumed food mostly grown on their own farms. While they continue to rely on self-produced grains, vegetables, meats, and eggs for a large portion of their diet, rural households are now purchasing more of their food as they enter the mainstream of the Chinese economy. Cash purchases of food by rural Chinese households increased 7.4 percent per year from 1994 to 2003. Consumption has shifted from self-produced to purchased food at a rate faster than can be explained by income growth or changes in other household characteristics.
